VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering at Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County can be done at several levels. At the top of the pyramid are our volunteers who work diligently on behalf of our organization on the Board of Directors. Volunteers at this level must be willing to commit significant time and resources to the organization.

Volunteering in Direct Service is another level of participation. Most precisely, Direct Service volunteers serve as Peer Bereavement Counselors in our Fetal and Infant Mortality program. The Peer Counselor offers compassionate, private one-on-one support to bereaved families. Volunteers maintain client contact logs, promote the project in the community and participate in community training presentations.

Volunteering in Non-Direct Service work in administrative capacities is also an available option. Program volunteers schedule clients for education classes, conduct follow-up phone calls, and assist in clerical tasks for program maintenance. Volunteers may also participate in organizational activities including advocacy and fundraising. HMHB of Broward has several annual events, including the highly-recognized Mother’s Day Luncheon, for which we encourage volunteer participation.

Helping Hands for Healthy Babies
is our youth volunteer group which allows teens to work on projects that benefit the clients of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Broward. We encourage school organizations like Key Club International, Interact Club, Drama Clubs and others, as well as religious youth groups, to do drives (toy, food, baby, child and maternity clothing) on behalf of HMHB of Broward and receive service hours.

We encourage any creative ideas you may come up with, so feel free to contact us to discuss your fundraiser!

1. Car Wash: Most of us have cars and most of us need to wash them every now and then. Setting up a carwash is fun, relatively easy to do and can be a successful fundraiser. Make sure you have a good location, enough volunteers, and some goodies to sell while people wait for their cars. You can also have a Pet Wash.

2. Holiday Gift Wrapping: Get in touch with a mall or store in your area and ask about setting up a gift-wrapping fundraising booth for their customers, for Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, or Christmas.

3. Bake Sale: Let’s face it, we all love to eat, so why not have a bake sale by taking advantage of special holidays like Easter, Passover, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah or any regular school day. You can have your local pizza shop or grocery store donate food and drinks and sell them at each exit when school lets out. You can also sell hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and donuts in the morning before school starts.

4. Multi-cultural / International Days: March is diversity month. A multicultural day may be a great way to raise awareness, celebrate our cultural diversity, and fundraise at the same time. Don’t forget to try to get students from as many different cultures as possible to participate. This is a great way to learn, come together, have fun, and raise money for a cause at the same time.

5. Special Day: Sell tickets that allow students to wear a hat for the day or something different. Everybody loves these fun and crazy fundraising days. You can organize anything from “Wacky Hat Day” to “Black Tie Friday” to “Backwards Day.” Students pay a small fee to participate and because the event doesn’t cost anything to organize, all the money you collect will be pure profit.

6. Penny Challenge: This is set up as a competition among school homerooms. Each homeroom has a bucket. Students drop pennies into the bucket. At the end of a set time-period, the homeroom that collects the most pennies receives special recognition and a prize.
To make things even more fun, some school groups add a twist: They allow students from other homerooms to add silver coins to the bucket of any other homeroom. For each silver coin added, the value of that coin is subtracted from the homeroom's penny total. This works well in some schools if done in the spirit of fun. Others think that allowing students to sabotage the challenge in this way sends a negative message. Whatever approach you might take, a Penny Challenge can raise hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.

7. Parking for Sale: We always want the closest parking spot. So why not sell parking spaces in the student parking lot. Spaces closest to the building go for a higher price than spaces in the rows that are farther away. You can also sell all spaces for the same amount and place the parking space numbers in a hat. Then let each student who pays the fee to draw from the hat to review his or her awarded space number.

8. Give It Up: Students chose to give something up and instead donate the money that would have been used. Students and teachers can give up things like Friday night takeout ($30), a morning latte ($5), making lunch instead of buying hot lunch ($7). The goal is 100% participation no matter how large or how small, reinforcing the message that this is a whole community project. Raising funds in this manner helps students think about how much they have to be thankful for and what they could do without for a short period of time.

9. Dollar a Day Campaign: Come up with a simple yet highly effective idea - each student and teacher tries to donate at least $1 each day for a span of 12 days. Parents can be asked to make matching pledges. The idea is simple, yet the response can be tremendous.

10. Movie Under the Stars: This is a more elaborate fundraiser, yet it’s a great way to show school spirit and bring families together. Rent an inflatable screen and ask for a $5 donation. Students can poll to decide which movie to show. The event can be publicized through posters, flyers, and the schools automated phone system. You can also raffle off donated items and giveaway bags filled with candy, coupons, and family fun magazines.
